Description:
Generally chocolate brown turning to a lighter brown when dry with fine
lighter stripes sharply demarcated from whitish or yellowish sapwood.
Sapwood is distinct, whitish or yellowish to cream. The luster is high
with medium to coarse texture and its grain is straight or interlocked.
It is a unique wood hardly found in the US.
Properties:
Heartwood is rated very durable and resistant to fungi. Also highly
resistant to attack by dry-wood termites. Very stable wood. Due to its
resemblance of ipe frequently used as an alternative choice.
Janka Hardness: 2140
Very hard with and Janka Hardness Scale of 2140lbf is almost hard as
Cabreuva and Jatoba and close to 66% harder than red oak.
Workability:
The wood is moderately difficult to work and resulting surfaces,
especially in planning, are fair to poor due to the coarse texture and
frequent grain irregularity. The wood turns well and takes a good finish
if filler is first applied.
Uses:
Heavy construction, recommended for wide use in floor coverings with
heavy traffic
