IPE / BRAZILIAN WALNUT DECKING

IPE/BRAZILIAN WALNUT
Scientific Name: Tabebuia spp.

Description:
Ipe is dark brownish, olive to dark olive, generally uniform with occasional contrasting yellowish and dark brown striping. The grain is essentially straight, but also interlocking. It has fine to medium texture, luster moderate or lacking depending on the region it grows.

Properties:
It is a extremely hard, dense and very heavy wood so it is advisable to pre drill before nailing and screwing into it. Its strength can be attributed to the natural oils and highly concentrated density levels contained in the wood fibers. It is also very durable and stable once dry. Ipe is highly resistant against fungi and termites. Because of that Ipe is highly recommended as a first choice for exterior use as a decking. Ipe wood deck does not lose its durable properties and resists wearing off and can simply stand up to the elements for the decades to come. Due to its hardness and stability Ipe is an excellent choice for wood flooring.

Characteristics:

• Insect resistant
• Cool tempersture - it doesn't absorb heat
• Repels wood rot & decay
• Does not wear off under heavy use
• Resists mold & fungus
• Outlasts composite materials
• Resists scratches & slivers
• It has increased slip resistance

Janka Hardness: 3680

Vey hard with basic density is 0.87g/cm3 and Janka Hardness Scale of 3680lbf.

Workability:  Hard Wood. The wood is difficult to work and resulting surfaces, especially in planning, are fair to poor due to the coarse texture and frequent grain irregularity. The wood turns well and takes a good finish if filler i

Uses
Ipe is extensively used in construction work, especially for maritime purposes. Is highly valued by homeowners for its strength and appearance and installed as a flooring or decking.
