Description:
Jatoba's rich color, very high level of hardness and good stability make
this specie one of the most popular exotic wood. The heartwood of this
specie is orange-red to reddish-brown with dark fine streaks. It often
has a golden luster. After time heartwood will darken and become dark
brownish/red. The grain is usually interlocked with a medium to coarse
texture.
Properties:
Jatoba is a dense and very durable wood with very high resistance to
fungi and termites. Commonly appearing in Jatoba is a natural mineral -
silica causing slight milky discoloration.
Janka Hardness: 2350
Vey hard with basic density is 0.76g/cm3 and Janka Hardness
Scale of 2350lbf. It is about 82% harder than red oak, 27% harder than
Tigerwood and 7% harder than Cabreuva.
Workability:
It is moderately difficulty to saw and machine because of the wood's
high density and toughness. Has good gluing properties. Need to be
sanded properly to avoid tearouts.
Uses:
Jatoba wood, is often used in flooring but also ideal for stair treads,
athletic equipment, tool handles, railroad ties, gear cogs and wheel
rims. Can also be used for carpentry, cabinet making and fine furniture.
