CUMARU/BRAZYLIAN TEAK
Scientific Name:
Dipteryx Odorata
Description:
Fresh heartwood is reddish brown or purplish brown with light
yellowish-brown or purplish streaks; upon exposure gradually' becomes
uniform light brown or yellowish brown. Luster rather low to medium. The
species has an irregular, slightly interlocked grain and is coarse and
wavy in texture. Waxy or oily feel.
Properties:
Very hard and resistant to decay and insects. Nervous wood and needs to
be properly dried.
Janka Hardness: 3540
Very hard with and Janka Hardness Scale of 3540lbf. It is about 174%
harder than red oak and 50% harder than Jatoba.
Workability:
Because of its oily nature, the wood glues poorly. Also it tend to be
difficult to sand due to its hardness and interlocking grain.
Predrilling is suggested as splitting can occur with the dried form of
this species.
Uses:
Heavy construction, cogs and shafts, barge and dock fenders, flooring,
decking, railroad crossties, docks, bridge construction, marine
construction, tool handles, bearings, turnery.
